Plot summary for "Whiskey Dark"[]
1961, The Baltic Sea. USSR captain Masha Alekseev of the Whiskey-class submarine S-353 is leading a classified operation, transporting Volkov, a KGB courier he neither trusts nor likes, to St. Petersburg. The submarine is under attack by depth charges, but neither Alekseev nor his crew can identify their attackers or locate any vessels.
As the attacks continue, Volkov privately reveals to the captain the nature of their cargo: a Terminator CPU. He also expresses concern that there may be a Western spy on board. The strikes persist with unnerving accuracy, as if their enemies know exactly where S-353 will be. While Alekseev is using the periscope, another charge hits the submarine, injuring him. Volkov insists on changing course, but Alekseev refuses, citing his strict orders. Accusing Alekseev of being the spy, Volkov relieves him of duty and orders the course change—only to be suddenly stabbed to death by a crewman.
Alekseev, shocked, holds Volkov's body while the rest of the bridge crew holds the attacker at gunpoint. Suddenly, the crewman starts shooting, killing several bridge members. A bullet to the face reveals his true nature: it is a Terminator. The machine declares that S-353 will maintain its course, or everyone on board will be terminated.
The Terminator searches Volkov's body but does not find the CPU. It announces that it will begin searching the submarine, warning Alekseev against any attempts to change course. As soon as it leaves the bridge, Alekseev informs the crew that there is an enemy infiltrator on board, but the Terminator easily dispatches anyone that dares attack it.
Meanwhile, Alekseev quietly reveals that he has the CPU, having taken it from Volkov’s body. Dimitri, his second-in-command, confesses that Volkov was not actually KGB but a member of a secret group sent to retrieve the CPU. He reveals that he is also part of this group, showing Alekseev a barcode tattooed on his arm. Alekseev accuses him of being a traitor, but Dimitri defends himself saying that they are trying to prevent an impending nuclear war.
Before Alekseev can respond, the submarine is hit by a critical explosion, ejecting part of the crew, including the Terminator, into the sea. The vessel is now lost, but Dimitri urges Alekseev to let him send out a message so that the CPU might one day be recovered. Alekseev, angry at the machine that destroyed his ship, agrees.
Dimitri transmits a Morse code message as the submarine sinks. As the Terminator sinks into the depths, it translates the final transmission: "Agents dark. Cargo stable. Retriev--."
