Official description of The Terminator #1 from Dynamite Entertainment:[1]
The plans to kill Sarah Connor and her son John have failed, but the genocidal Skynet isn't out of options yet. There are still a few more avenues into the past that will allow it to destroy the human resistance that is poised to smash its processors into silicon shrapnel - it just needs to expand its theater of operations.
Opening a new front in the war, Terminators are dispatched across the globe and throughout time to target current resistance fighters, their ancestors, and anyone else unlucky enough to be in the strike zones. And while none of these secondary assignments are as straightforward as the missions of the first T-800 and T-1000, time is literally on the machines' side. When all of history becomes a war zone, nowhere - and nowhen - is safe!
Acclaimed creator DECLAN SHALVEY (ThunderCats, Old Dog) returns to the present for another blockbuster Dynamite series, joining rising star artist LUKE SPARROW (Star Trek) for all-new tales of Skynet and its nigh-unstoppable mechanical assassins - all supported by algorithmically perfect covers from SHALVEY, EDWIN GALMON, SWAY, and DAVID COUSENS!
Plot summary for "Out of Time"[]
The story begins with a T-800 endoskeleton lying dormant at the bottom of a body of water. Suddenly, it powers on.
We next see an older couple who live off the grid in Alaska in 2018. We learn that they have been living off the grid during the War Against the Machines. Harper, the husband, is fishing on the lake while his wife, Penny, washes dishes in their cabin. Harper then spots a Terminator, covered in rotten skin and clothes, emerging from the lake and heading toward their home.
Harper rushes to the shore, yelling warnings to Penny. He races ahead of the T-800, telling the terrified Penny that it's time and asking her to burn a mysterious box. Harper grabs a shotgun and declares his eternal love for Penny, just as the Terminator breaks into the cabin while Penny sets a box filled with photos and keepsakes on fire. Harper opens fire on the Terminator and wonders how they got there.
A flashback to 1979 Seattle shows Harper and Penny hiding in a motel. A mysterious man appeared shortly after their marriage, coinciding with Harper's name appearing on the marriage certificate. This man killed their families in order to reach them and they've been running from him for a long time. The couple has rented a plane to escape to Alaska, not knowing that the man had tracked them down using a discarded ticket stub.
Just as the plane lifts off, the Terminator appears in the middle of the runway. Harper rams the man with the plane, ripping off part of its arm and face, revealing to Penny its mechanical nature. Although the Terminator clings to the aircraft, Harper manages to shake it off and send it plunging into the waters below. Harper announces that the plane will not be able to fly for much longer and that wherever they land will be where their kids will be born.
The story goes back to 2018, as Harper and Penny sacrifice themselves to destroy the contents of the mysterious box. Harper is killed when the Terminator crushes his skull, and Penny suffers a fatal heart attack. The Terminator, now reduced to a mere endoskeleton, watches as a photograph of the couple holding a baby burns, before leaving the cabin and walking back into the lake.
