Official Description[]

Solo or in co-op, play as a group of survivors in this survival open world return to the iconic Terminator universe set in the aftermath of Judgment Day.

It’s been 4 years since the day humanity nearly perished. The truth of the event is still muddied in half-truths as you emerge from a shelter to attempt and reestablish some semblance of society in a world that seems hell-bent on eliminating you and the last vestiges of mankind. You are tasked with scouring the surrounding land for materials, information, other survivors and key resources in order to establish a base of operations for your fledgling group.

But you’re not alone. Skynet’s machines are hunting you. They don’t feel anything. They never stop. Ever. Until they completed their mission: eradication of all humanity. Alone or within a group of up to four, lead humanity’s rise from the ashes and unravel the truth behind the bombs, Skynet and the Terminator threat.

  • True to the legend: Meet iconic characters of the franchise as well as original ones and immerse yourself in a meticulously crafted world set in the post-apocalyptic future of James Cameron’s masterpiece.

  • Rise from the ashes: Grow the remnants of humanity at a home base you’ll use to establish a new foothold for humanity and stand tall against the machine threat alone or in co-op with up to three friends.
  • Think before you shoot: While you’ll be armed to attack up close and at range, stealth and caution may be more intelligent approaches with Skynet’s machines and scavengers lurking.[3]

Plot[]

Survivors takes place in its own separate timeline.[2] The game itself place after the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day. While Sarah and John Connor succeeded in preventing Judgment Day from occurring in 1997, this didn't prevent the birth of Skynet. In September 2005, Skynet attained self-awareness and initiated a global nuclear assault, resulting in the extermination of billions of people. Those who were distant enough from the epicenters or who found refuge in anti-nuclear bunkers had to confront the onset of a new era amidst radiation and societal collapse. With long-range communication systems offline, people congregated in small, often conflicting communities, striving to secure the scarce resources available.[4]

By 2009, 4 years after Judgment Day, various human factions compete for dominance over territory and vital resources. Very few were aware of the events that led to the nuclear holocaust, and only a few knew about Skynet's existence. Skynet, however, was not idle, as it prepared for war in the present of 2009, as well as in the future. A T-800 was sent back to 2009 to tilt the scales of war in Skynet's favor.[4]

As players play through the game, they will learn what happened in the intervening years between 1997 and Judgment Day.[4]

Gameplay[]

Survivors is an FPS. It has a single player mode, where players progress through the story, and a multiplayer co-op mode which allows players to play through the campaign with up to 3 allies. There are currently no plans for PvP gameplay.[4] Gunplay is slow and tactical, and players will have to choose if they want to approach their objectives by stealth, or go in guns blazing.[5]

Survivors takes place in a post-apocalyptic United States and includes various biomes, including mountains, deserts, cities, and outposts. Environmental hazards include low visibility and lingering radiation from Judgment Day.[5]

Players have to deal with a single T-800 in the game. The T-800 can't be stopped. At this point in the timeline, Skynet's production capabilities have not reached their peak, and the T-800 is more durable than any other enemy encountered in the game.[4] The titular Terminator is hunting humans in the open world, and as such, situations can arise where the player may observe the Terminator killing fellow humans. However, sooner or later, the Terminator will detect them and move to engage. Throughout the game, the T-800 cannot be destroyed, and the player's only recourse is to flee.[5]

At the start of the game, players have access to a pre-existing base. Players can expand their base through constructing and enhancing facilities. Multiple drivable vehicles will be available, and the game's vehicle system aims to support players' movements across the game world, creating various exploration experiences, encouraging tactical thinking, and promoting multiplayer cooperation.[4]

Various human factions will feature, each with their own agendas and beliefs about Skynet.[5]

Development[]

The developers chose the timeframe for its "narrative potential," as the timeframe between Judgement Day and the formation of the Resistance has not been explored much in Terminator media. The game uses Unreal Engine 5.[4] The developers watched the first two Terminator films extensively while designing the game.[5]

The decision to make the T-800 in the game invulnerable stemmed from a number of considerations. The first was lore, setting the Terminator of the future apart from Skynet's less advanced 2009 arsenal. The second was to harken back to the tone and atmosphere of the first two films, to capture the sense of dread and urgency when faced with an unstoppable killing machine.[4]

The decision to make the game accessible through early access was to test its survival mechanics.[5]

The game was originally slated to be released on Steam Early Access on October 24, 2024,[6] before being pushed back to 2025.[2]
