The Terminator: SkyNET, also simply known as SkyNET in North America, is a first-person shooter developed by Bethesda Softworks in 1996.

It featured SVGA graphics at 640x480 resolution (which was state-of-the-art in 1996), full multiplayer support (through LAN or modem), and fully customizable multiplayer maps.
A DOS FPS action game designed by Todd Howard, Morton Mørup and John Pearson, it was developed and published by Bethesda Softworks using XnGine and released in 1996. It was originally an expansion, and became the sequel to The Terminator: Future Shock, also developed by Bethesda Softworks.
SkyNET is played in the first-person perspective at all times, and was one of the first FPS games to use the now standard control setup with the keyboard controlling movement while the mouse controls the direction in which the player is looking. Each of the eight levels in the game requires the player to solve a number of objectives before continuing to the next level, while fighting enemy terminators with a wide variety of guns and grenades. Another obstacle in each level is the harsh terrain, as many areas contain too much radiation for the player character to remain alive. The terrain is navigated in three ways, 'on foot', in a jeep with a mounted cannon, or in an Aerial Hunter Killer. Before each mission, you are given a briefing via a full motion live-action video cutscene.
SkyNET features a deathmatch mode, which allows players to fight in a number of maps as either a human or a terminator.
SkyNET is driven by Bethsoft's XnGine, which was one of the first game engines to have the following features: Full 3D perspective, real-time light sources, and full texturing.
While the majority of the game uses textured polygons to display levels and structures, many of the items, weapons, and level decorations are still shown using older sprite technology.
SkyNET is playable in both 320x200 and 640x480 display resolutions. If The Terminator: Future Shock is installed on the computer, then it can be launched to play in these resolutions as well. Originally Future Shock was only playable in 320x200. [1]

Trivia[]
- Having been originally developed as an expansion for Future Shock, SkyNET appears to be a "midquel," taking place after the Resistance has obtained an HK-Aerial and before Thomas Jensen's death and the introduction of the T-800.
- There are two playable Terminator models in multiplayer; one male and one female. These player skins have damaged bloody flesh with an endoskeleton visible underneath. When a player is using one of these skins in a multiplayer game, their view will resemble a T-800's HUD; the screen will be tinted red, and white text and charts will regularly display. These effects are purely cosmetic.
- If Future Shock is played using SkyNET's engine, then a glitch occurs in Mission 13. The player will be unable to kill a certain character to progress to the next mission, due to the character's sprite no longer being solid. The player will only be able to continue to the next level by using the level skip cheat.
- The game's manual states that there are "two known models of Terminators" at the time period during which the game takes place: The endoskeleton and the T-600. However, the manual includes illustrations of an endoskeleton and a T-800 for this enemy profile. The T-800 only appears in Future Shock, where the Resistance encounters it for the first time.
- The original Future Shock game had a black night sky, whereas SkyNET instead uses a dark blue night sky for both games' missions. An unofficial patch exists that allows the user to restore the original black night sky in SkyNET.
