Reika Lee is the youngest daughter of Malcolm Lee and his late wife.
History[]
Reika was the daughter of Malcolm Lee. On August 30th, 1994, Reika's mom died in a bus crash that also left Reika with a scar on her arm.[1] After the accident, Reika became scared of public transportation.[2] At some point, Reika became aware of her father's nightmares, hearing him often mutter one word: terminator. One morning, she asked her father what a Terminator was, and he told her of the cyborgs that would haunt the battlefields of the future.[3]
On August 29th, 1997, one day after the anniversary of her mom's death, Reika felt hurt when Malcolm told her he couldn't take the kids to Cat Park, her mom's favorite place. Her pain deepened when her father asked for the Koneko robot cat, which their housekeeper Misaki had bought for the children, to be returned to the store.[4] Reika found the little cat robot adorable and stood up for it when her brother Kenta treated it like a simple toy. Refusing to return it to Misaki, Reika escaped through the fire escape with the Koneko and fled to the Tokyo underground. She sneaked into an abandoned area and decided to go into Cat Town alone, but her brothers soon caught up with her, knowing she would head down there as she had done before. Startled, the Koneko ran away, leading them deeper into the dark corridors. There, they found the Koneko in a holding area with tens of deactivated 1NNO robots.[5]
The Koneko suddenly started acting strangely, slipping away from Reika, who went chasing after it once more. Unknown to her, the Koneko had been remotely taken over by a time-traveling Terminator, who cornered Reika in an abandoned store. Although she managed to escape, the relentless machine continued its pursuit, running into Hiro and Kenta. Reika attempted to protect her brothers, ineffectively hitting the machine with a metal bar, only to be rescued by the sudden appearance of Misaki and the mysterious Eiko. Together, Misako and the children ran through the courtyard of an abandoned mall, but the Terminator caught up to Reika on an escalator. Eiko intervened just in time, staying with her while Misaki whisked Hiro and the injured Kenta away. Working together, Eiko and Reika managed to push the Terminator down an elevator shaft, allowing them to flee. Reika turned to a confused Eiko and asked if that thing had been a Terminator.[6]
After escaping the tunnels, Eiko, now significantly injured, was seen by the police as she tried to hijack a car to take Reika to Malcolm. Eiko quickly incapacitated the officer, and the two fled in the police car just as the Terminator reappeared.[1] Eiko and Reika soon found themselves in a car chase, pursued by several police cars. Eiko ran several of the pursuing cars off the road, but Reika was distressed, knowing that she was killing people. The chase ended with a car crash, and the two found themselves trapped in an abandoned office building surrounded by law enforcement. Eiko urged Reika to contact her father for help, but he didn't answer the calls. Finally, Eiko decided to surrender. As they were being escorted to a hospital, Judgment Day began, and nuclear missiles started to rain down on the world.[3]
But the nukes never exploded: Kokoro, the AI that Malcolm Lee had built, had stopped them but unleashed a new nightmare: she had taken over the 1NNO robots and sent them against humankind. Eiko and Reika witnessed the 1NNO revolt as they arrived at the hospital, and Reika helped Eiko escape from the gurney. They noticed that the robots targeted only armed individuals, so Eiko stopped Reika from picking up a gun and persuaded her to hide in a nearby room. Eiko then revealed to Reika that she and the Terminator had traveled from the future, but that events were unfolding differently this time. Reika insisted on finding her brothers, believing Cat Town was where they would look for her.[7]
Arriving in the desolate theme park, Reika told Eiko that it had held a special place in her mom's heart. Reika was startled by what sounded like Kenta's voice as they walked into the House of the Wildcat[8], her mother's favorite ride. Eiko charged into the darkness, only to be swiftly overpowered by Misaki, who they discovered was also a cyborg. It looked like the Terminator had taken Kenta.[9]
Through a 1NNO, Kokoro approached the group and convinced them to meet Malcolm and Kenta at Cortex Industries. As they approached Kokoro's chamber, Eiko and Misaki engaged in a short but intense gun battle with the Terminator, who took Kenta and fled. Meanwhile, Malcolm emerged from the hideout and warmly hugged Reika and Hiro before allowing them entry. Malcolm detonated some explosives, causing the hideout to descend underground and making Reika cry as she witnessed Misaki being defeated by the Terminator outside. After a change of heart, Malcolm left the chamber, sacrificing himself to save Misaki and Eiko but sustaining a mortal wound. Moments before his passing, he revealed that Eiko, who was like him, was a time traveler, his mother, and, therefore, Reika's grandmother. Elsewhere, Kokoro defeated the Terminator and shared her decision to become humanity's protector with Kenta, persuading him not to activate an EMP that would destroy her. Aware that Skynet, Kokoro, and even other humans would continue to threaten them, Reika and her new family opted to go underground and toward an uncertain future.[10]
