Mateo is the son of an unknown abusive father and Alicia, living near Laredo, Texas. Carl protected him and his mother Alicia against his father, a few months after he killed John Connor. After Sarah Connor, Dani Ramos and Grace came, Carl told them to leave for a couple of days because it was no longer safe and that he was not coming back.
