Legion is a program designed for cyber warfare and a highly-advanced computer system possessing artificial intelligence. It is the equivalent of Skynet in the Dark Fate timeline.

History

At some point after 2020, Legion became self-aware and began the equivalent of Judgement Day. On Day 1, Legion engaged in cyber warfare with the entirety of humanity by shutting off its connection to key resources, such as electricity and the Internet. On Day 2, the world governments responded by attempting to use tactically-placed EMP strikes by using nuclear missiles in order to contain Legion, but Legion survived the attempt. On Day 3, the world was at war with Legion. Due to the nature of Legion's attacks, global food networks were utterly destroyed, causing mass famine and resulting in death all over the world, and also led to infighting in the human survivors over limited food and resources. Over the following years, Legion engaged in a war of attrition with humanity's survivors before developing and deploying Hunter-Killers and Terminator units, such as the Rev-7, to hunt down and terminate the survivors.

Before its destruction,[1] Legion developed time travel technology and would use it to send back a Rev-9 Infiltrator in order to terminate Dani Ramos, who was a threat to its existence.

Behind the Scenes

Information began to leak following a test screening in late May, with outlets reporting that Skynet is gone and replaced by Legion.[2]

In July 2019, the existence of Legion was confirmed. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Tim Miller stated, "Gabriel comes from something that is not Skynet, but it’s like Skynet."[3] In a leaked audio, Dani Ramos states that "Legion didn’t exist until humans created it," confirming the existence of Legion in the film.[4] In a later interview with IGN, Miller said, "The rise of A.I is inevitable, Judgment Day is inevitable, but it makes sense that if you change something in the past, it’s gonna manifest differently in the future and that difference is manifested in the technology that Gabriel represents — because it’s not Skynet, it’s Legion..." further confirming that Legion is taking over the role of Skynet.[5]
